Growing up, the oven was used for storage, not for baking! As a first-generation Chinese immigrant, Lisa never baked as a child and didn’t turn on an oven until she was 19. While in college studying Biomedical Engineering, Lisa began stress baking using free recipes on the internet, making drop cookies and shortbread. She stumbled across the French Macaron, was determined to make it right. That adventure in of itself took well over 5 years. Lisa first began decorating sugar cookies in 2011, for a Breast Cancer Awareness bake sale for work (where she was a compliance engineer for a medical device company); they were horrible and so difficult to execute that she did not attempt again until the following Christmas. Over the years, she honed her craft with endless hours of practice, watched lots of YouTube (thank you, SweetAmbs!), steadily developed her skills and grew her audience. In 2014, she started working on cookie orders for friends/family, and eventually got licensed to sell out of her home. Her work has been a part of many celebrations and life events, and loves how much joy custom cookies bring to people’s lives. In 2018, Lisa was featured in S1E1 of Netflix’s Sugar Rush, and was also the winner of Food Network’s Christmas Cookie Challenge. Many media outlets have picked up on the Borderlands Bakery journey, include Style Magazine, Good Day Sacramento, Fox40, ABC10, Sacramento Bee, and many others! Lisa hopes to continue growing Borderlands Bakery, making it a resource for all levels of cookiers, bakers, and dessert lovers local to the Sacramento area and around the globe. Today, Lisa holds a full time job as a Regulatory professional in the Biotech industry and continues to grow Borderlands Bakery.
